Victor, Colorado - The City of Mines

sightseeinghistoryoutdoorsfree

Explore this authentic gold mining ghost town with over 500 historic mines, stunning mountain scenery, and the famous Victor Gold Mine viewpoint.

Victor, Colorado sits just south of Cripple Creek and offers an even more authentic glimpse into Colorado's gold mining history. Unlike its more commercialized neighbor, Victor retains much of its original character as a working mining town, with dirt streets and buildings largely unchanged since the early 1900s. The Victor Lowell Thomas Museum, housed in a historic building, tells the story of the famous broadcaster who grew up here. The museum features mining artifacts, vintage photographs, and exhibits on daily life during the gold rush. Lowell Thomas went on to become one of America's most famous radio commentators. Drive or hike to the Victor Gold Mine viewpoint for spectacular panoramic views of the still-active mining operations and the surrounding mountains. The Vindicator Valley Trail offers excellent hiking with abandoned mining structures and stunning wildflowers in summer. Victor's main street features authentic false-front buildings, antique shops, and local cafes that transport visitors back in time. The Fortune Club bar, operating since 1899, serves drinks in a genuine turn-of-the-century atmosphere. The drive between Victor and Cripple Creek passes numerous historic mining structures and offers excellent mountain scenery. Combined with Cripple Creek, Victor makes for a full day of gold rush history exploration.
